When Pigs Fly

Some dreams take a while to land. The Flying Pig Living Books Library began with the simple conviction that children not only deserve rich books and stories, but crave them. Children, like all of us, learn best from stories. Not textbooks. Not twaddle. Living books, written by authors who love their subjects, books that make you “think, feel and grow.”

That conviction, borrowed from Charlotte Mason, is the heartbeat of this library.

With nearly 2.800, and growing, carefully curated volumes spanning history, nature, literature, biography, science, theology and the arts, the Flying Pig exists to put great books in eager hands in the Manning, South Carolina area.

About the Curator

I’m Shea - A Charlotte Mason homeschooling mother of 4, a lifelong reader and learner. I am the devoted curator of books that matter. Books that esteem the hearts and minds of children. I have lived and breathed Charlotte Mason education for over 15 years and living books have been the heart of my family's homeschooling journey.

This Library is the natural overflow of a life spent in pursuit of the best books. The Flying Pig is my gift to the homeschool families of this community - because every child deserves access to the great books and every family deserves a place to find them.

Why Flying Pigs

You may be wondering, “ Why Flying Pigs.” That is a strange name for a library, but it has significant meaning for me. During a particularly difficult season of homeschooling, I was ready to throw in the towel. I was ready to quit. Homeschooling is hard. In a moment of defiance ( I may have stamped my foot), I declared to myself that I would homeschool until my children graduated or pigs flew. A few days later I was shopping in a home decor store and, to my surprise, there were winged pigs everywhere. I bought the statue and the lamp you see in the library that day and they have served as a reminder of that promise ever since.

I only have one child left at home now. I still haven’t seen any pigs fly, but I have attended 3 graduations.
